The Wind-Eye - A Re-imagining of the Modern Window

This project is comprised of a series of exercises which explore the architectural element of the window - specifically, in the context of the Danish courtyard. It questions what the spatial, cultural, environmental and poetic implications of the window are.

Domestic courtyards in Denmark are undergoing an identity crisis. While once bustling social hubs and the site of shared functions such as laundry and bathrooms, today they are often disused, with poor infrastructure. This neglect of the courtyard, as well as its historic changes of function, can be understood through analysing the many augmented and bricked over windows which overlook it. This project proposes that, through working with these windows, both the social health of the community, and the physical health of the building can be addressed. In the project, these windows are treated as ‘patients‘, and through a series of investigations (eg 3D scanning, casting fragments, drawing) they are dissected, examined and diagnosed by the architect.
